International Day of Mourning Events Scheduled in Duncan, Nanaimo, and Parksville on April 28, 2006

Nanaimo, Duncan & District Labour Council will be taking part in a number of ceremonies in the area on Friday, April 28 to mark the Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job.

In Duncan, Labour Council members will attend a ceremony at 11 a.m hosted by Steelworkers 1-80 at 351 Brae Road . In Nanaimo, there will be a gathering at Pioneer Plaza upper level at 90 Front Street at noon. And in Parksville, CUPE 3570 invites union members and the public to an event at 4:30 p.m. at the Parksville Picnic Shelter.

Most municipalities on Vancouver Island have proclaimed the Day of Mourning locally and will be flying their flags at half mast.

In 2005, 188 workers in BC died due to job related disease or injury, including 12 young workers.

43 forestry workers died, up from 14 in 2004. There has been a 40% increase from 2004 in both general worker deaths' and young workers' deaths on the job, and from injuries and illnesses acquired on the job.

The Day of Mourning has now grown into a worldwide event observed by unions, central labour bodies, labour councils, municipalities and national governments. The Day of Mourning is observed in nearly a hundred countries worldwide; it has been formally endorsed by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). The Parliament of Canada officially recognized the Day of Mourning in 1991.

Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, please contact the Labour Council at (250) 753-0201
