International
Day of Mourning Events Scheduled in Duncan, Nanaimo, and Parksville
on April 28, 2006
Nanaimo, Duncan & District Labour Council
will be taking part in a number of ceremonies in the area on Friday,
April 28 to mark the Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured
on the Job.
In Duncan, Labour
Council members will attend a ceremony at 11 a.m hosted by
Steelworkers 1-80 at 351 Brae Road . In Nanaimo, there
will be a gathering at Pioneer Plaza upper level at 90 Front Street
at noon. And in Parksville, CUPE 3570 invites
union members and the public to an event at 4:30 p.m. at the
Parksville Picnic Shelter.
Most
municipalities on Vancouver Island have proclaimed the Day of
Mourning locally and will be flying their flags at half mast.
In 2005, 188 workers in BC died due to
job related disease or injury, including 12 young workers.
43 forestry workers died, up from 14 in
2004. There has been a 40% increase from 2004 in both general
worker deaths' and young workers' deaths on the job, and from
injuries and illnesses acquired on the job.
The Day of Mourning has now grown into a
worldwide event observed by unions, central labour bodies,
labour councils, municipalities and national governments. The
Day of Mourning is observed in nearly a hundred countries
worldwide; it has been formally endorsed by the International
Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). The Parliament of
Canada officially recognized the Day of Mourning in 1991.
